In February 1945, war in the Pacific rages on, with one of the bloodiest and most essential battles taking place in the island of Iwo Jima. Five Marines and a Navy corpsman raise the flag on Mount Suribachi, and the captured image becomes symbolic of American victory. The photo inspires America, which immediately pronounces the people in the photo heroes. But the surviving flag raisers themselves have no interest in being symbols or heroes, wanting instead to remain in the frontlines, fighting alongside other soldiers who were dying without being recognized.
